Every June, families across the country take time to celebrate fathers and father figures, but did you know Father’s Day began more than 100 years ago? The idea is often credited to Sonora Smart Dodd of Washington State, who wanted to honor her father, a Civil War veteran who raised six children on his own. Inspired by the growing popularity of Mother’s Day, she worked to establish a day dedicated to recognizing dads and all they do for their families.
The first Father’s Day celebration took place in 1910, but it took decades before it became an official national holiday. In 1972, Father’s Day was officially recognized in the United States, and today it’s celebrated with family gatherings, cards, gifts, cookouts, and quality time together.
