There’s something magical about opening your mailbox in December and finding a colorful envelope addressed just to you. While digital greetings are quick and convenient, Christmas cards still hold a timeless charm. But did you know this tradition has a fascinating history that stretches back nearly two centuries?

The very first commercially printed Christmas card was created in 1843 in England by Sir Henry Cole, a man looking for a quicker way to send holiday greetings. At the time, it was customary to handwrite long letters of cheer, which could be quite time-consuming. Cole worked with an artist to design a card that could be mass-produced, and thus the Christmas card was born! Early designs often showed family scenes, festive greenery, or even unusual Victorian humor (some cards featured frogs, bugs, or slightly odd illustrations by today’s standards).

By the late 1800s, the tradition had spread across Europe and North America, becoming a staple of the holiday season. Advances in printing made cards more affordable, and people began collecting and displaying them as decorations. Cards from this era often featured snowy landscapes, animals, and classic Christmas imagery—many of which shaped the way we visualize the holiday today.

Fast forward to the present, and Christmas cards come in every style imaginable: glittery, handmade, photo-based, or even digital. Some families use them as a yearly tradition to share updates and milestones, while others send them simply as a warm gesture of connection.

No matter how they’re shared, Christmas cards remain a reminder to slow down, reach out, and spread a little cheer during one of the busiest times of the year. ✨
